Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Awarded Four Accreditations by National Healthcare Quality Group

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has been awarded Health Plan, Health Network, Case Management and Health Utilization Management Accreditation by URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the healthcare industry.

Blue Cross is very proud to have earned these accreditations from URAC and to distinguish our organization as meeting these standards of excellence," said Dr. Dwight Brower, interim chief medical director of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana. "Our commitment to quality improvement is demonstrated every day by our employees who work hard to deliver quality services to our healthcare consumers, business customers and providers."

URAC standards for Health Plan Accreditation are developed and continuously revised through a consensus-driven process involving hundreds of volunteer industry experts. Recently updated, URAC Health Network Accreditation standards include key quality benchmarks for network management, provider credentialing, utilization management, quality management and improvement and consumer protection.

URAC is the only accreditation organization offering standards that specifically address the rapidly evolving field of case management. URAC's Case Management standards cover several critical operational categories, including staff structure, management and development, quality improvement, organizational ethics and complaints.

URAC's Health Utilization Management Accreditation standards ensure that only appropriately trained, qualified clinical personnel conduct and oversee the utilization review process, that a reasonable and timely appeals process is in place, and that medical decisions are based on valid clinical criteria.

"By applying for and receiving URAC accreditation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has demonstrated a commitment to quality healthcare," said Alan P. Spielman, URAC president and CEO. "Quality healthcare is crucial to our nation's welfare, and it is important to have organizations that are willing to measure themselves against national standards and undergo rigorous evaluation by an independent accrediting body."

URAC, an independent, nonprofit organization, is a leader in promoting healthcare quality through accreditation and certification programs. URAC's standards keep pace with the rapid changes in the healthcare system and provide a mark of distinction for healthcare organizations to demonstrate their commitment to quality and accountability. Through its broad-based governance structure and an inclusive standards development process, URAC ensures that all stakeholders are represented in setting meaningful standards for the health care industry.
