Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA) holds 12 consecutive "A" ratings for its financial strength from national rating service Standard & Poor's.
In its most recent review of the company, Standard & Poor's report noted the following highlights:
- Strong competitive position: “The company is the largest health insurer in Louisiana based on membership (1.14 million members), with an estimated market share of at least 50% of the privately insured market.”
- Very strong capitalization: “Historical surplus growth has been strong.”
- Very strong liquidity: “BCBSLA’s very strong liquidity is supported by the makeup of its investment portfolio and the short-tailed nature of its health insurance liabilities.”
- Return on revenue: “Operating performance is strong. The company generally targets lower return on revenue than its for-profit competitors.”

BCBSLA and its HMO Louisiana, Inc. subsidiary hold five accreditations from URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the healthcare industry. For more information, view our press release.

- Case Management*- In 2001, BCBSLA was one of the first two Blue Cross Plans in the country to earn this accreditation.
- Health Network*±- BCBSLA's Preferred Care PPO network was the first nationally accredited PPO in Louisiana. The company has held Health Network Accreditation continuously since 1998.
- Health Plan*±- Continuously earned by subsidiary HMO Louisiana, Inc. since 2001
- Health Utilization Management*±- Both HMO Louisiana, Inc. and BCBSLA Preferred Care PPO hold this accreditation, first awarded in 2001.
- HIPAA Privacy - BCBSLA has held HIPAA Privacy accreditation since 2003. It is one of only 10 companies nationwide to receive such recognition. Press release
