Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana (BCBSLA) holds 11 consecutive "A" ratings for its financial strength from national rating service Standard & Poor's.
In its most recent review of the company, Standard & Poor's cited BCBSLA's strong competitive position, strong earnings profile and very strong capitalization, as well as recognizing its broad provider networks, good customer service and commitment to the Louisiana market. Among the company's strengths cited by the noted rating service:
- Commitment to customers - “[BCBSLA’s] strategy is to be the leading health insurer in Louisiana and an active community partner...its strategies are not driven by public shareholder pressures.”
- Competitive advantages - “...The strength of its Blue brand, its having the broadest contractual access to provider networks in the state, and its good customer service.”
- Strong market position - “BCBSLA covers more than 1.1 million medical members (as of June 30, 2007), which is roughly 50% of the insured population.”

URAC Accreditations
BCBSLA and its HMO Louisiana, Inc. subsidiary hold five accreditations from URAC, a Washington, D.C.-based healthcare accrediting organization that establishes quality standards for the healthcare industry. For more information, view our press release.
Current accreditations, with exclusions noted below:
- Case Management*- In 2001, BCBSLA was one of the first two Blue Cross Plans in the country to earn this accreditation.
- Health Network*±- BCBSLA's Preferred Care PPO network was the first nationally accredited PPO in Louisiana. The company has held Health Network Accreditation continuously since 1998.
- Health Plan*±- Continuously earned by subsidiary HMO Louisiana, Inc. since 2001
- Health Utilization Management*±- Both HMO Louisiana, Inc. and BCBSLA Preferred Care PPO hold this accreditation, first awarded in 2001.
- HIPAA Privacy - BCBSLA has held HIPAA Privacy accreditation since 2003. It is one of only 25 companies nationwide to receive such recognition.
