Charitable Giving Guidelines

Does your nonprofit organization need help making a difference in Louisiana communities? We want to hear about it!

The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation partners with community organizations to improve health and education throughout Louisiana.

We are especially interested in helping organizations that are focused on improving public health, reducing barriers to care for the uninsured, or conducting research to prevent or cure disease. We give particular consideration to organizations that address specific populations, such as those in rural areas, children, seniors, or those who are at risk and underserved.

Experts say that 70 percent of all disease can be prevented through changes in behavior. That's one reason Blue Cross invests in health education for Louisianians.

We want to sponsor programs that help our friends and neighbors learn ways to stay healthy and make wise decisions about their healthcare. Education-related programs are those focused on health literacy, the training of medical professionals, or the education of young people age pre-kindergarten through college.

Other kinds of proposals

We focus on efforts that promote learning and healthy communities. However, we will also consider requests that would improve a nonprofit organization's overall effectiveness.

These "capacity-building" proposals should address important management or governance issues that can be handled with a small amount of money in a short period of time. Examples could include organizational assessment, board/staff development, program evaluation or information technology.

All requests for charitable assistance must promote the following goals:
  • Support the Blue Cross business mission to improve the quality of life in Louisiana.
  • Create positive visibility for Blue Cross.
  • Demonstrate our commitment to corporate social responsibility.
Requirements for requesting organizations:
  • Must be located in Louisiana and serve Louisianians
  • Must be tax-exempt by the Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of the tax code
  • Must be incorporated with the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office and in good standing
  • Must have a longstanding reputation for credibility and integrity
We will not consider requests from the following:
  • Programs or events outside of Louisiana
  • Organizations that are not tax-exempt
  • Political campaigns, candidates, parties or partisan activities
  • Sectarian, denominational or religious organizations for support of theological functions
  • Athletes and athletic teams
  • Beauty pageants
  • Direct funding of labor, fraternal or veterans' organizations
  • Students raising funds for travel to an out-of-state competition
  • Parent-teacher organizations
  • Capital projects or campaigns
  • Organizations that are in direct competition with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana
  • Organizations or causes that do not complement our goals for corporate social responsibility
  • Providers on contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana
