Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Wins Third Platinum Fit-Friendly Honor

For the third year in a row, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana has earned Platinum level honors as a Fit-Friendly Worksite from the American Heart Association. The award recognizes Blue Cross’ employee wellness program, Healthy You, Healthy Blue.  The company won its first award, at the Gold level, in 2009.

Worksite wellness programs are becoming increasingly important in offsetting the heart disease risks inherent in the sedentary nature of the average office job. The Fit-Friendly program recognizes employers who work to safeguard the health of their employees by creating a culture of physical activity and healthy eating in the workplace.

As part of an ongoing effort to increase healthy eating options, the company offers a healthy café on its main campus and vending machines with exclusively healthy snacks.  Company subsidies keep down the prices of water, salad and fruit offered in the café to encourage employees to make healthier choices.
