Blue Cross Looks to Boost Customers' Health Affordably with New Quality Blue Program
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana is transforming healthcare by rewarding quality. This year, Blue Cross introduces Quality Blue Primary Care. Blue Cross will now pay doctors for helping their sickest patients get well. In the past, insurance companies have paid doctors for simply seeing a patient. Now, Blue Cross will reward doctors for going the extra mile to keep patients healthy.
Blue Cross will roll out Quality Blue in stages over the next few years. First, the company will focus on doctors and clinics treating the most patients with chronic health issues. These include diabetes and heart disease. Blue Cross wants to set up 10 clinics in Quality Blue this year.
Under the Quality Blue model, Blue Cross and doctors will work in sync. Both will share data to understand the health challenges patients face. For example, some patients may need help scheduling tests.
A Quality Blue “navigator” will work with a “practice coordinator” at each doctor’s office. They will make sure each patient is ready for scheduled office visits. They will also match patients with the support they need to get healthy.
Blue Cross nurses will work with patients between doctor visits. These nurses will help patients follow their care plans.
To help launch Quality Blue, Blue Cross is paying for the software clinics need. Blue Cross is also giving doctors’ offices the technical and clinical guidance they need. The company’s goal is to roll out Quality Blue without disturbing work at the clinics. Quality Blue also pays doctors and clinics extra for helping patients reach health goals.
