Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana No Longer Offering Medicare Prescription Drug Plan in 2014

Effective Jan. 1, 2014, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana will no longer offer RxBLUE, its Medicare Part D prescription drug plan. Blue Cross has notified the approximately 13,000 RxBLUE members about this plan ending, and has provided a list of other Medicare drug plans available in Louisiana as well as instruction on how they can switch to a new plan.

Blue Cross will continue to offer its BlueChoice 65 Medicare supplement plans in 2014 and this coverage is not affected by the discontinuation of RxBLUE.

Blue Cross has contacted the RxBLUE members by mail and has made information available online and via Customer Service telephone representatives and authorized agents to assist them during this transition. Information about RxBLUE ending and other participating Medicare Part D drug plans in Louisiana is available at www.bcbsla.com/RxBLUE.

Blue Cross will continue coverage for RxBLUE members through the end of 2013. These members have until Dec. 31, 2013, to switch to another participating Medicare drug plan and avoid having any gaps in coverage.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana offered RxBLUE since 2006, but chose not to renew its contract with the federal government to offer a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan next year.

The company made this decision after carefully evaluating its existing plans, networks and benefits. To allocate resources most effectively, Blue Cross made the strategic business decision to discontinue offering RxBLUE beginning in 2014.
