Walgreens and Express Scripts Agree

Walgreens Is Back in Network for Blue Cross and HMO Louisiana Members

Baton Rouge - We at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana are pleased to report that on July 18, Express Scripts and Walgreens announced a multi-year agreement, which means Walgreens will once again be a part of the Express Scripts network. Beginning Sept. 15, Blue Cross and HMO Louisiana members with Express Scripts pharmacy benefits can count Walgreens as a network provider for their prescription needs.

At Blue Cross, we’re committed to keeping prescription drugs affordable and accessible. That’s why we contract with Express Scripts, an independent pharmacy benefit manager, to administer pharmacy benefits for many of our customers. Express Scripts’ job is to negotiate nationwide contracts with pharmacies like Walgreens on behalf of health plans and employer groups. After previously reaching a stalemate, Walgreens and Express Scripts have now come to an agreement. The companies are not disclosing the terms of that agreement.

To see pharmacies that are currently in the network, members can log in to their account at www.bcbsla.com and click Manage Medication, then Find a Pharmacy. By Sept. 15, Walgreens pharmacies will be visible on the Express Scripts pharmacy locator. To confirm their benefits are administered by Express Scripts, members should check their ID cards for the Express Scripts logo.

Again, we will be pleased to count Walgreens as a network pharmacy for our members once more. Blue Cross is committed to providing our members access to the affordable quality care they need and deserve. We have every confidence that Express Scripts and Walgreens have negotiated an agreement that is in the best interests of our members and their pharmacy benefits.
