Childhood Obesity Prevention Benefits

Blue Cross has partnered with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation* to increase awareness about a benefit for children who are diagnosed as overweight or obese.

Benefit Overview

Children ages 3 to 18 who are diagnosed as overweight or obese and covered under an eligible policy are allowed at least four primary care doctor or pediatrician visits and at least four registered dietitian (RD) visits.

Additionally, children ages 6 to 18 diagnosed with obesity and covered under an eligible policy are fully covered for six months of intensive treatment with eligible health and behavior programs and professionals. The six-month coverage begins when the child is diagnosed with obesity at his or her annual wellness visit.

Here’s how you can access these benefits for your child:

1: Call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out if you are eligible.

2: Schedule an appointment with your child’s doctor. If you do not have one, search the directory to find doctors near you.

  • To find a doctor, select Medical, then All Doctors. Under Which Network, type your network prefix or select your network. Under Which Provider, type Pediatrics or Family Doctor to find a primary care doctor. Type Registered Dietician to find a dietitian. Type your city or zip and select Search.

3. Bring this card with you to your child’s appointment to identify the visit as part of the prevention benefit.

*Services vary by plan type and plan benefit options.  Not all services are available to all members.
